Enhancing the entrepreneurial ecosystem
The 2022 Chancellor’s Entrepreneurial Achievement Awards honor UW–Madison innovators and alumni who further the Wisconsin Idea through outstanding accomplishments in entrepreneurship. A ceremony honoring the recipients was held March 23 at the Discovery Building.
Bucky and the band hand John Wiley a birthday surprise
Several members of the UW Marching Band, Bucky Badger and invited guests made an early-morning surprise visit to the Madison home of Chancellor Emeritus John Wiley to celebrate Wiley’s 80th birthday on March 23. Wiley led UW–Madison from 2001 to 2008.
A sunny return to campus
Students enjoyed a glorious return from spring break, as Monday, the first full day of spring, was sunny and warm. They returned to new mask guidance, which no longer requires masks to be worn indoors, with some exceptions.
Ducking into spring
Several mallards celebrated the first official day of spring on March 20 by taking a swim on the rapidly expanding patches of open water on Lake Mendota.
System President Tommy Thompson given a warm good-bye at Bascom Hall
“President Thompson really answered the call two years ago when we badly needed a leader at System. I can’t imagine a better person to have been president of System during the pandemic,” UW–Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank said.
‘Sower in the Field’
Moving crews installed South African artist Mary Sibande’s sculpture "Sower in the Field" at UW–Madison's Chazen Museum of Art on Feb. 27. Sibande's works, exhibited in leading museums around the world, deal with race, gender and labor in South Africa, including her family's forced domestic work imposed by the then-apartheid state.
Moonshine: Celebrating poetry and dance
The UW–Madison Dance Department on Feb. 25 presented a live performance of Moonshine, a mix of music, theater, dance and poetry.

‘Stroll’ wows crowd at Kohl Center
Members of UW–Madison "Divine Nine" fraternities and sororities performed a stroll — a dance often performed in a line by Greek letter organizations to represent power and unification — on Feb. 12 at the Kohl Center.
Soul Talk: Food, then discussion
Soul Talk, a UW–Madison Black History month event, featured plenty of good eating and vigorous discussion. A soul food dinner was followed by an interactive talk about social justice and Black representation in the media.

More than 120 people participated in a Lunar New Year celebration hosted by the Malaysian Student Association in the Multicultural Center Lounge in the Red Gym on Feb. 5, one of several celebrations by student groups.
UW-built instrument will enhance views of distant galaxies
A near-infrared spectrograph, which splits light into its individual colors to form a rainbow-like spectrum, will soon be shipped to South Africa from UW–Madison. Custom-built here by staff in the Washburn Astronomical Laboratories, it will expand the capabilities of the Southern African Large Telescope.
Glimmer at WIMR
Sunlight shines and shadows fall upon people passing through the atrium of the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research (WIMR) lobby at the west end of the UW–Madison campus recently. On the wall, below the word “research,” are the motto “Today’s discovery, tomorrow’s cure” and a list of the facility’s major supporters and financial donors.

The semester started Jan. 25 with routines both familiar – moving briskly to class through the cold, masking up indoors – and new – picking up free surgical masks and take-home COVID-19 antigen tests at the unions.
