Brad Pierce received his Ph.D. and master of science in meteorology from UW–Madison and is a physical scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on the UW campus.
There will now be a pool of investigators to investigate discrimination complaints, including allegations of sexual misconduct. The added capacity will also allow the Title IX coordinator to expand education and prevention initiatives.
David Murphy, joining the UW from the University of Chicago, will serve as an important adviser to Chancellor Rebecca Blank, Heller and other campus leaders on budget and finance matters.
The budget director is responsible for developing and managing UW–Madison’s $3 billion annual budget and ensuring that the university complies with all state, federal and UW System budget requirements.
The finalists for associate vice chancellor for finance — David Moore, assistant vice president and chief budget officer at George Mason University, and David Murphy, associate vice president for finance at the University of Chicago — will give presentations and answer questions.
Lois Brooks, who currently serves as CIO and vice provost, information and technology at Oregon State University, has years of experience in large research-intensive higher education institutions.

Marsha Mailick, who has been on temporary leave as vice chancellor for research and graduate education since January, will continue her research on developmental disabilities at the Waisman Center.
Lisa R. Carter, associate director of special collections and area studies at the Ohio State University Libraries, has been selected to lead UW–Madison Libraries. She succeeds Ed Van Gemert, who is retiring.

A search and screen committee has recommended three finalists for the new position of vice chancellor for student affairs at UW–Madison. All three candidates will be visiting campus in the weeks ahead to give public presentations and meet with members of the campus community.
Qiang Chang, a longstanding member of the University of Wisconsin–Madison Waisman Center’s leadership team, has been named the new director of the center following a nationwide search.
Dean of Students Lori Berquam will be assigned to a senior role at a new campus as part of the program’s unique leadership development component.
The program is designed to give faculty the opportunity to work in campus leadership at the highest levels and gain insight and experience that will help them develop their leadership skills.
The candidate chosen will succeed Ed Van Gemert, who announced in September that he will retire in May after 46 years of work with libraries and 36 years of continuous employment with the General Library System.
Shain, who advanced the university’s interests in China and established University Research Park, died peacefully in Madison after a brief illness. He was 92.
Jay Bieszke, who has 20 years of experience managing complex engineering, construction and facilities maintenance programs, worked most recently as chief of staff for the assistant secretary of the Navy for energy, installations and environment.
All four deans have received feedback on the results of their reviews and all have agreed to accept reappointment to their positions.
