Forecast: campus weather turns… competitive

For 10 years, UW-Madison has been participating, along with about three dozen other schools, in the National Collegiate Weather Forecasting Contest, which started in the early 1980s. Organized by Penn State, the NCWFC enables undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty, to earn bragging rights as the best weather forecasters in their specific categories.

Exhibit turns spotlight on Percent for Art

The Gallery of Design is hosting “Beyond Bricks and Mortar: the Design and Fabrication of Four Campus Percent for Art Projects.” The exhibition presents conceptual drawings, working drawings and maquettes, and materials samples used in the design and creation of four art installations or sculptures funded through the State of Wisconsin’s Percent for Art Program.

Students get rare glimpse into mental illness

The 19 students in Beyond Myth and Cruelty: An Overview of Serious Mental Illness, a special First-Year Interest Group at UW-Madison, are working five hours a week this semester at Off the Square, a club that serves approximately 150 folks with chronic mental illness each year, providing a safe haven for them to pass the time.

Volunteer effort launched to prevent campus crime

Badger Watch, a new volunteer-based crime prevention effort modeled after the national Neighborhood Watch program, has been launched by the UW Police Department. The pilot program, initiated by Central Campus community officer Kathern Paige, involves nine buildings located between North Park Street and Henry Mall. Paige hopes it will be expanded to include the entire campus.
