Student inventors get boost to commercialize color 3-D printing, iPhone app
Applying a similar approach to the 3-D printer, a group of University of Wisconsin–Madison students are commercializing a device that adds color to a printer that now dominates the market. Their business idea was one of two student projects to receive an Igniter grant from the university’s Discovery to Product (D2P) office. Read More

Six student a cappella groups harmonized for a cause last Thursday, Oct. 23, during the BadgerThon A Cappella Showcase. The groups sang to a sellout audience of 300 people at the H.F. DeLuca Forum in the Discovery Building. The event — organized by BadgerThon, a philanthropic student organization at UW–Madison that raises funds, awareness and support for the American Family Children's Hospital (AFCH) — raised more than $3,600 for AFCH. Registrar educates students about personal information privacy
From time to time, students may notice that third parties can email wisc.edu addresses with various offers. This happens because campus email addresses are considered public information under state law, and UW–Madison is required to provide that information to third parties upon request. Students who would like to stop receiving emails have a couple of options, says Greta Petersen, the associate registrar for student services. However, there are consequences for opting out. Read More
Bipartisan Issues Group strives to find solutions
While Congressional gridlock in Washington continues to attract public ire and media attention, a UW–Madison student organization is working to promote bipartisanship across campus. The Bipartisan Issues Group, or BIG, has entered its third year on campus. According to the group’s mission statement, its goal is to “prove that realistic solutions to America’s . . . toughest problems do indeed exist.” Read More

Alumnus finds passion for patient advocacy after accident
When Jeff Mahlum suffered a spinal cord injury during a diving accident in 2011 that left him paralyzed from the chest down, he had the unfortunate opportunity to learn how confusing and daunting the health care system can be. Having graduated with a major in biology from the UW in 2013, Mahlum decided to use the gap year between undergraduate and medical school to learn more about how he could understand the needs of his future patients. Mahlum, who’s now enrolled at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, discovered patient advocacy and the Center for Patient Partnerships. Read More
