Computer sciences, mathematics professors win Sloan Fellowships
Two University of Wisconsin–Madison professors have been selected for Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowships - an honor awarded on a competitive basis to promising young researchers in the early stages of their careers.

Two UW–Madison engineers named to National Academy of Engineering
On Thursday, Feb. 5, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) announced it has named two University of Wisconsin–Madison engineering professors to its 2015 class of new members. Grainger Professor of Power Electronics and Electrical Machines Thomas M. Jahns and Steenbock Professor of Engineering Physics Raymond J. Fonck are among the 67 new members and 12 foreign members elected to the NAE in 2015.
Rudolph honored as Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer
A University of Wisconsin–Madison polymer engineer has received the 2015 Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Natalie Rudolph, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering, is among 11 recipients who will receive the award in 2015.

Francis Halzen, the University of Wisconsin–Madison physicist who was the driving force behind the giant neutrino telescope known as IceCube at the South Pole, has been named a winner of the 2014 American Ingenuity Award.

Trisha Andrew, a University of Wisconsin–Madison assistant professor of chemistry, is one of 18 early career scientists from around the country named a Packard Fellow for Science and Engineering. The award includes a grant of $875,000 over five years to pursue research and is given in recognition of the potential significance of scholarship and innovation from the nation’s most promising young scientists and engineers.

Winning climate change solutions range from meat processing to mindfulness
The Climate Quest competition to spur innovative climate change solutions is down to a field of five. At the Climate Quest Concept Pitch on Sept. 19, 18 teams presented their ideas to a panel of investors and entrepreneurs, who rated the ideas on many factors including creativity, scalability and potential impact. The panel selected five teams to advance to the next round of the competition.
Environmental historian William Cronon awarded Wilderness Society’s highest honor
Environmental historian and University of Wisconsin–Madison professor William Cronon has been presented with The Wilderness Society’s Robert Marshall Award — the organization’s highest civilian honor — for his contributions to the protection of America’s wild places. The award, named for wilderness visionary Robert Marshall, is given to a private citizen who has made outstanding, long-term contributions to conservation and fostering an American land ethic.
Herbarium director receives award for telling the story of plants
Ken Cameron, director of the Wisconsin State Herbarium, received the Peter Raven Award from the American Society of Plant Taxonomists Aug. 5. Cameron, also a professor of botany at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, is a world expert on the orchid family.
