Dancers took to stilts for a Brooklyn Jumbies workshop in Lathrop Hall on Saturday, Feb. 28. Participants worked with the dance performance group, which teaches cultural elements of the African diaspora like stilt walking, and Chris Walker, a UW–Madison associate professor of dance, to learn new dance moves in preparation for “Strut!” — a university dance event scheduled for May 2. The workshop was hosted by the UW–Madison Arts Institute as part of Laura Anderson Barbata’s spring interdisciplinary arts residency.

Campus to honor and welcome faculty of color

Crow Institute for the Study of Evolution at UW–Madison and its partners. “Darwin Day 2015: Islands and Isolation” will run all day Thursday, Feb. 12, and focus on the unique opportunity that islands provide to witness evolution and the diversity of life.

UW experts forecasting 2015 Wisconsin agriculture trends

In 2014, the total net farm income in Wisconsin reached an all-time high of more than $4 billion, but agricultural experts at the University of Wisconsin–Madison are predicting some changes in 2015. Bruce Jones, a professor of agricultural and applied economics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, will be among a handful of UW–Madison and UW-Extension experts to recap the status of Wisconsin’s agricultural enterprise in 2014 and discuss trends developing for 2015 at the Wisconsin Agricultural Economic Outlook Forum on Wednesday, Jan. 21.

Last week, when Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told women in tech fields to wait to be rewarded rather than ask for raises, he was quietly but forcefully challenged by his interviewer, Maria Klawe. The next day, facing a storm of criticism, Nadella backpedaled, saying by email, “Maria’s advice was the right advice. If you think you deserve a raise, you should just ask.” Klawe, president of Harvey Mudd College will speak Friday at Union South about increasing women’s participation in science and technology careers on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus.
