Few departments on the UW–Madison campus use as much glassware as the Department of Chemistry.

Groundbreaking chemistry experiments often require uniquely designed scientific glass, and with its brittle nature glass often breaks. So it makes perfect sense to have a master glassblower within the department to help design and build innovative equipment for specific experiments and to repair expensive pieces instead of having to replace them.

Tracy Drier has been the Department of Chemistry’s Master Glassblower since 2000. He works directly with professors on their new designs, in addition to teaching graduate students the craft of scientific glassblowing.
