New Faculty Focus: Alicia Lee

Title: Assistant Professor of Clarinet

Hometown: Grew up in Okemos, Michigan. Most recently, I have lived in NYC for about 15 years.

Educational background: Columbia University, bachelors degree in French Language and Literature (2004); University of Southern California, masters degree in Clarinet Performance (2006); The Colburn School, Professional Studies (2008).

Previous position: Ensemble Connect, a Program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute, fellow (2006-08); Freelance musician in New York City (2008-present)

How did you get into your field of research? I come from a musical family and began playing the violin at age 5. I eventually switched over to clarinet at 11.

What attracted you to UW–Madison? I knew that it was a great school with a strong music department! Knowing that it’s on an isthmus just makes it all the more appealing.

What was your first visit to campus like? Even though it was a stressful trip since it was for an interview, I had a really positive experience! Having grown up in the midwest, it was nice to be back in such a warm, friendly environment. A great break from stressed-out New York City!

Favorite place on campus? I had amazing ice cream the other day at the Daily Scoop. It was actually Greek yogurt, but I’d never be able to tell the difference.
