New survey seeks employee input on HR Design

Campus feedback is being sought in the HR Design project, as work teams look to firm up recommendations for revamping the university’s human resources structure.

A survey will be available on the project Web site until Monday asking many questions about how to best organize the campus’ HR system. The survey questions are the same questions asked at two engagement events this week. The first event, held Tuesday, drew about 135 individuals to Union South. The next event is Thursday at 9 a.m. at Carson Gulley.

Vice Chancellor for Administration Darrell Bazzell says getting a wide spectrum of input from campus stakeholders is a critical piece of the HR Design process.

“The work teams are continuing to wrestle with different concepts and will provide recommendations this spring,” Bazzell says. “The final recommendations will be shaped by input gathered from across the campus. We welcome ideas and feedback from the entire campus community.”

Work teams from Phase I of the project will present preliminary recommendations early in April. Following those preliminary recommendations, the campus will again be asked to offer feedback, including two forums scheduled for April 17 and 19. Locations for the forums are still being finalized.

Final recommendations from the Phase I work teams are due at the beginning of May.

Phase II teams will present their preliminary recommendations at the start of May. Engagement events to gain campus feedback on those recommendations are being planned. Final Phase II recommendations are due at the beginning of June.

Final recommendations will go before campus governing bodies in the fall and, ultimately, the legislative Joint Committee on Employee Relations for approval.

The HR Design project is an opportunity to develop a model human resources system to meet the unique needs of a world-class research and teaching institution.

Language in the 2011-13 state budget allows UW–Madison to create a human resources structure separate from the state and UW System. The UW System has also been granted flexibility to create its own HR structure.
