New director to take over Research and Sponsored Programs

August 24, 2004

On Sept. 1, Kim Moreland will take over as director of Research and Sponsored Programs, the campus office that oversees the administration of outside grants and awards, which last year totaled more than $700 million.

Moreland, formerly the director of grant and contract administration at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, also will oversee the submission of proposals to external sponsors for research funding, teaching fellowships, student services and outreach programs.

With more than 20 years of experience in managing contracts and grants at institutions, including the University of Kansas, Moreland says one of her primary goals as RSP director will be to enhance partnerships with research faculty and the people who support their work on and off campus.

“An individual researcher would have no time for research without the infrastructure provided by RSP and other offices across campus,” she says. “I want RSP to continue developing the systems that make research management more straightforward and to strengthen the relationships among all the groups that are part of this infrastructure.”

Moreland is a past president of the National Council of University Research Administrators and a recent recipient of the organization’s Outstanding Achievement in Research Administration award.
