‘Flags’ author plans visit

February 3, 2002

College of Letters and Science history graduate James Bradley, author of the New York Times best-seller “Flags of Our Fathers,” will present a free lecture, reception and book signing Thursday, Feb. 7, 7:30 p.m., at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, 30 W. Mifflin St.

The son of Iwo Jima flag-raiser John “Doc” Bradley of Antigo, James Bradley never knew the stories behind the most reproduced photo in history because his father never spoke about the war. But after Doc’s death, James discovered closed boxes of letters and photos in his father’s office, resulting in his writing the book.

The event is sponsored by the College of Letters and Science and the Department of History, UW–Madison; the Wisconsin Alumni Association; and the Wisconsin Veterans Museum. For more information, call (608) 267-1799.
