Drum corps event to restrict street access next week

August 2, 2006

The Drum Corps International (DCI) World Championships will be returning to Camp Randall Tuesday-Saturday, Aug. 8-12.

During the week dozens of drum corps, primarily from around the United States and Canada, will be practicing and/or staging in various locations around the campus and the Madison area as a whole.

Among the staging areas will be lots 91, 51 and possibly 60, along with Frances Street adjacent to the Kohl Center, Monroe Street and Randall Avenue adjacent to the stadium and the GAR Park at Camp Randall.

There will be restricted street access around the stadium during the week. On Monroe Street from Lot 18 to Randall Avenue and Randall north to West Dayton Street, the curbs on the Camp Randall side will designated for DCI use only.

From midnight on Monday, Aug. 7, until midnight on Tuesday, Aug. 8, parking will be restricted on Breese Terrace between University Avenue and Regent Street for use by souvenir trailers, but traffic will be able to move through in both directions.

Breese Terrace between University and Regent will be closed to traffic from midnight on Wednesday, Aug. 9, until 6 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 13.

Because parking is very limited, spectators are being urged to park at the Alliant Energy Center and take Madison Metro shuttle buses to and from the stadium. The buses will transport fans on Tuesday and from Thursday through Saturday evening. Drop-off and pickup locations will be on Regent Street near the Regent Apartments.

Event planners estimate that there will be an audience of 25,000 people for the Division I final competition on Saturday night, Aug. 12.
