UW-Madison lands coveted grant to accelerate clinical research

November 2, 2004

The National Institutes of Health has awarded UW–Madison a $14 million grant to expand the nation’s capacity to conduct clinical research by teams of investigators that bridge the health sciences disciplines.

Clinical research in the United States — that which is done with and for patients — lags behind laboratory research in both federal funding and the number of researchers. As part of its “roadmap,” or long-term plan to speed up new discoveries, the NIH is funding the largest clinical-research training program in its history to build a workforce prepared to test diagnostic and treatment approaches efficiently and move them into health care practice as quickly as possible. A related goal is to develop teams of physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other professionals.
