Uhlrich to oversee campus research policy

MADISON — Daniel Uhlrich, a professor of neuroscience in the School of Medicine and Public Health, has been appointed associate vice chancellor for research policy.

In his new role, Uhlrich will oversee many facets of research policy on campus, including responsible conduct of research, animal research and the use of human subjects. He will assume his new responsibilities on Aug. 1, taking over from William Mellon. Mellon will return to the School of Pharmacy faculty while maintaining a 50 percent Graduate School appointment to continue to oversee the campus Select Agent Program and a few other policy issues.

“I am grateful to Bill Mellon for his excellent leadership and years of service, and look forward to working with Dan to keep the UW–Madison research enterprise running smoothly,” says Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate School Dean Martin Cadwallader. “We are pleased that we will be able to benefit from Dan’s extensive research experience on campus.”

Uhlrich studies the neural modulation of visual signals in a brain structure called the thalamus, and its role in epilepsy. Since 2009, he has also served as chair of the Animal Care and Use Committee of the School of Medicine and Public Health.
