“The Writer’s Influence” will be a permanent installation at the Writing center, located at 6176 Helen C. White Hall.

The collaborative project is designed to show how art can build community. Thirty-two undergraduate students in a UW–Madison 2-D design course have been working for the past month in randomly selected groups of four to create a work based on the theme, “The Writer’s Influence.”

Five Writing Center staff members then reviewed final layouts and selected one from each of the groups to be installed at the center to transform one of the main teaching spaces.

“The project took the students through the creative processes of brainstorming, making thumbnail sketches and doing preliminary and refined layouts,” says Jenny Price, a master in fine arts candidate in the Department of Art who is teaching the class. “The students shared concepts and techniques and learned from other group members to develop skills necessary for this and future endeavors.”

Price says an important goal of the project was to make her students aware of the impact that a work of art can have on a community and, in turn, raise the community’s awareness of the visual arts on campus and their benefit to all scholarly disciplines.

“We hope that other departments will see the long-term benefits of this project and follow suit,” she says.

“The Writer’s Influence” was made possible with support from the Writing Center, which offers writing assistance for UW–Madison students.
