UWPD seeks info about State Street Mall battery

June 16, 2008

The University of Wisconsin Police Department (UWPD) is seeking information about a battery that took place during the early morning hours today (June 16).

At approximately 2:15 a.m., a UW–Madison male student reports being battered on the State Street Mall between the Memorial Library and University Bookstore.

The victim was intoxicated at the time of attack and believes the suspect may have a connection to a person the victim was talking to at a local bar just prior to the incident. It does not appear anything was taken from the victim.

Two UW–Madison students found the victim sometime after the attack and summoned help for him. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital.

The suspect is described as a heavy-set white male in his 20s, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall.

This case is currently under investigation by the UWPD. If you have any information regarding this incient, please contact UWPD at (608) 264-COPS.

UWPD encourages students, faculty and staff to observe late-night safety, including the following tips:

  • Carry a cell phone and dial 911 for help.
  • Walk with a friend whenever possible.
  • Take advantage of UW–Madison SAFEwalk and SAFEride programs available on campus, even during summer months. Call (608) 262-5000 for detailed information.
  • If you consume alcohol, do so in moderation to avoid being in a position of increased risk.
  • Keep your head up. Do not look down or away. Make brief eye contact with all people you meet.
  • Use public walkways and avoid isolated shortcuts where you have limited escape routes.
  • Be aware of places along your path of travel that could conceal a criminal (shrubbery, building recesses, etc.). Avoid or keep a distance from these areas whenever possible.
  • Make sure someone knows when you leave and when to expect you back.
  • If you think someone is following you, cross the street. Head for a well-populated and well-lit area at night.
