UW signs memo of understanding related to power plant

May 22, 2003

Representatives from UW–Madison, Madison Gas and Electric, the State of Wisconsin and several environmental and citizen groups have signed a Memorandum of Understanding related to the proposed West Campus Cogeneration Facility.

The memorandum, unveiled Thursday, May 22, addresses a series of commitments related to air and water quality and energy conservation. The commitments will ensure that the university and community can meet their increasing utility needs while protecting the environment.

MGE, in partnership with the university and the state, has proposed that the facility be built at the 600 Block of Walnut Street, adjacent to the existing heating plant. The natural gas-fired cogeneration facility would be one of the cleanest-burning power plants in the state, and produce 150 megawatts of electricity, steam heat and chilled water air-conditioning.
