UW Credit Union, members boost scholarship effort

December 10, 2008

The UW Credit Union and its members are stepping forward to support the UW Foundation’s “Great people. Great place.” initiative.

The credit union has made an outright $215,000 gift to campuswide need-based undergraduate scholarships, and through Dec. 31 it is matching contributions from its members as well.

The UW Foundation board of directors already has made a one-to-one match available for gifts to unrestricted need-based support. That match will be in place for the total gifts coming from the credit union and its members.

Through Nov. 27, credit union members had made gifts of $100,563 to the initiative. With the UW Credit Union match of a like amount, that resulted in $201,126 being eligible for the UW Foundation matching funds. After the UW Foundation match, the total was $402,689 for undergraduate student support.

“Wisconsin residents have reason to be proud of our excellent universities, but there is an urgent need to make sure talented young people are not excluded, simply because they can’t afford to attend,” UW Credit Union President and CEO Paul Kundert says. “Some families simply don’t have the capacity to borrow what is needed to meet the gap in the cost of attendance. We thank the many UW–Madison faculty, staff and alumni who have already made a gift and hope that those who have not given will consider making a gift to this scholarship initiative.”

UW Credit Union members may make gifts at any branch location or through the credit union’s Web branch.
