Used cell phones benefit domestic-violence victims

September 14, 2006 By John Lucas

Anyone with an inactive or outdated cellular phone may donate it before Tuesday, Oct. 31, to benefit local victims of dating and domestic violence.

The University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Subcommittee on Dating and Domestic Violence is organizing the cell-phone drive as part of activities for October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

“We’ve recently seen an increase in dating and domestic violence on campus,” says Yolanda Garza, assistant dean in the Offices of the Dean of Students and chair of the University Subcommittee on Dating and Domestic Violence. “This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals who want to help victims, but aren’t sure how to do that. This is a tangible way people to get involved in a good cause.”

Phones will be resold or recycled. Approximately $40 per phone directly benefits Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS) of Madison. Last year, $6,700 was raised. The goal for 2006 has been set at $10,000.

Cell-phone users are encouraged to call their service provider for instructions on clearing the phone of personal information before donating. Chargers need not be donated with the phones. Tax receipts are also available.
