Eight students from the the UW–Madison Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers practiced welding, cutting and drilling at the College of Engineering's TEAM Lab during an evening workshop on Oct. 3. Volunteers for the City of Madison City Clerk's Office help eligible students register to vote during a National Voter Registration Day (NRVD) event held at Union South on Sept. 25. Distinguished panel
A prototype neutrino detector made up of these large panels built at UW–Madison’s Physical Sciences Laboratory recently “saw” its first particles at the international particle physics lab CERN in Switzerland. The panels are integral to development of a large detector that will be installed deep within a South Dakota mine in the 2020s to get a clearer look at neutrinos — the universe’s most abundant, but little understood, bits of matter. Bascom flamingos don soccer scarves
Thousands of soccer scarves have begun popping up throughout the Madison area — including on 50 pink flamingos Monday on Bascom Hill — to raise awareness for Madison’s new professional soccer team. The scarves bear the logo of Breese Stevens Field, the historic venue the club will call home when it kicks off its inaugural season in the spring of 2019. Bill Sagal, the first human Bucky Badger mascot, is assisted by Bill Sachse and Connie Conrad, who constructed the bulky badger. Bucky’s official birthday is Oct. 2, 1940, but it was not until nine years later that the symbol of UW spirit took on the physical form and name he's known by today. Read More
