Two students drown in Adirondacks

August 14, 2003 By John Lucas

Two UW–Madison students were among four camp counselors who drowned Tuesday in a swimming accident outside of Elizabethtown, N.Y., 110 miles north of Albany.

The UW–Madison students were identified as 19-year-old Adam Cohen, a second-year student, and 18-year-old David Altschuler, an incoming first-year student.

Two other counselors, Jonah Richman and Jordan Satin, were also killed, but had no affiliation with the university.

The four, counselors at Camp Baco in Minerva, N.Y., had been swimming at Split Rock Falls on the Boquet River when one fell into the water and was apparently swept away by currents. The other three apparently drowned while attempting to rescue him.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of two members of our campus community,” says Dean of Students Luoluo Hong. “That they died trying to save the life of another only makes the loss that much more tragic. Our thoughts and condolences are with their families and friends at this time.”

Assistance and support, including grief counseling, is available to students and other members of the university community through Counseling and Consultation Services at (608) 265-5600 or (608) 265-6565 after business hours.
