Two deans’ reviews begin

October 9, 2007

Reviews are under way for School of Veterinary Medicine Dean Daryl Buss and Division of International Studies Dean Gilles Bousquet.

The university adopted a standard five-year review procedure for deans several years ago. The purpose is to assess each dean’s academic and administrative leadership and performance in such areas as external relations and resource management. The chancellor and provost appoint the members of the review committees.

  • Review committee members for Buss include Ronald Laessig (review committee chair, population health sciences and Wisconsin State Lab of Hygiene, emeritus); Charles Czuprynski (pathobiological sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine); Irwin Goldman (horticulture and College of Agricultural and Life Sciences); Christopher Murphy (surgical sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine); Jerry Quilling (Kettle Moraine Veterinary Clinic, Plymouth, Wis.); Barbara Ripp (computer services, School of Veterinary Medicine); and Rebecca Stepien (medical sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine).
  • Review committee members for Bousquet include Philip Farrell (review committee chair, dean emeritus, School of Medicine and Public Health, pediatrics and population health sciences); Katherine Bowie (anthropology, South East Asia Center); Mason Carpenter (School of Business); Cindy Haq (family medicine and population health sciences); Robert Howell, (German, International Academic Programs); and Alberto Vargas (Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies, Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies).

The review process includes interviews with the deans’ constituents, including deans, faculty, staff, students and external stakeholders. The committees also invite written comments from the university community regarding Buss’ and Bousquet’s leadership and administration.

Written comments regarding Buss’ performance should be addressed to the committee chair at rhl@prof.slh.wisc.edu or to other committee members. The deadline for submitting comments or interview requests for Buss is Friday, Nov. 2.

Written comments regarding Bousquet’s review may be addressed to Farrell at pmfarrell@wisc.edu, with copies to Mo Noonan Bischof at mabischof@wisc.edu. The deadline for submitting comments for Bousquet is Friday, Nov. 9.

The review committee treats all communications as confidential, and the university will make every effort to protect such confidentiality within the framework of Wisconsin law.
