Traffic update: Lane closure on West Dayton Street

August 16, 2011 By

Starting this week, West Dayton Street will be down to one lane between Charter Street and Mills Street due to the Charter Street Heating Plant project. There will be flaggers in both directions and motorists and bicyclists should be on the lookout for them and follow their directions.

The lane closure is expected to continue through the end of the month.

People will be able to travel in both directions on Dayton Street, but if they experience delays they should use University Avenue (westbound), West Johnson Street (eastbound) or Regent Street as alternative routes.

The power plant contractor will be installing a primary power electrical duct bank under the roadway. It is a bundle of large plastic electric conduits encased in concrete. The conduits will carry wires that send electrical power around the campus.

The goal is to complete the project by the Wisconsin-UNLV football game on Thursday, Sept. 1. If the project is not completed by that date, the contractor will put a plate on the trench so that two-way traffic is possible. An effort will be made to restore two-way traffic at night.

The Charter Street Heating plant project involves replacing the old coal-fired boilers with some that burn natural gas.
