August 19, 2011 By

The third annual Madison Mini-Marathon will be taking place this Saturday, Aug. 20, on several campus area streets and motorists can expect some partial lane closures. Participants will be running on one half of the road around most of the course. The half-marathon and the 5K begin at 7 a.m. Both races will be completed by 10:30 a.m.

Access to the UW Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital will be maintained via Walnut Street and Observatory Drive.

Organizers estimate that there will be as many as 3,800 runners in the Half Marathon and 1,000 runners in the 5K. New this year is a kids’ race that is expected to draw an estimated 150 participants.

Langdon Street will be closed from 2 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Lot 1 will be closed Friday and Saturday and will reopen after 2 p.m. on Saturday.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to the “Healthy Women, Healthy Babies” fund in the UW Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. It was created to promote awareness about how the healthy lifestyle of a mother impacts and results in the birth of strong, healthy babies.
