Tandem Press Holiday Open House set for Saturday

November 16, 2010

Lovers of Tandem Press prints can enjoy a Holiday Open House on Saturday, Nov. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A special drawing for a Suzanne Caporael print and a David Lynch Catalogue will also take place in which all visitors will have the opportunity to participate.

Printmaking demonstrations will take place throughout the day. At 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. there will be etching and lithography demonstrations by Andy Rubin. Jason Ruhl will give a relief demonstration at 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Tandem Press will also highlight new prints by Caporael. The series continues Caporael’s ongoing study of visual cognition and recollection. Caporael has traveled more than 30,000 miles of American roads in order to witness the revelations and experiences of the United States, a country she refers to as an “impenetrable abstraction.”

In reference to a previous series of paintings called “Time” (2004-2006) Caporael quoted physicist J.T. Fraser: “Space is the vessel of time.”

But as we know, time robs memory of the details. In this new series entitled “The Memory Store,” Caporael presents the sensation of futility and procedural distance with purpose. The occasional “recognizable” shape or line prompt contemplation, while the images physical contradictions between hard edges and subtle erosions of boundaries encourage the re-assembly of the elements to the viewer’s own memory store.

New prints by Benjamin Edwards, Robert Cottingham, Sam Gilliam and Judy Pfaff will also be on view.

Tandem Press is a self-supporting printmaking studio affiliated with the Department of Art in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Tandem Press is located at 201 S. Dickinson St. in Madison. It is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. or by appointment.
