Statement from Chancellor John D. Wiley on SARS:

May 15, 2003

“As I am sure you are aware, in recent weeks Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) has caused concern in university communities across the country. UW–Madison, in consultation with state and local public health officials, continues to monitor the situation carefully.

As stated in information released this week from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, attending commencement ceremonies is not believed to put participants and guests at increased risk of exposure to the disease.

Further, the university does not anticipate SARS-related changes or restrictions for its summer sessions or other summer campus activities.

However, visitors to the university arriving from affected countries are asked to consider their plans carefully to make sure they are informed about SARS, and to take into account the risks that may attend such travel.”

If you or your family members have questions about SARS, reference the University Health Services web site or the CDC web site.
