Spring public policy series announced

Specialists in administrative law, entrepreneurship and social statistics will speak on a variety of public policy issues this spring through joint sponsorship of the La Follette School of Public Affairs and the Center for the World and the Global Economy (WAGE).

On Thursday, Feb. 19, Francesca Bignami, a law professor at George Washington University, will speak on “Toward Adversarial Legalism in the European Union? Evidence from Data Privacy Regulation,” at 4 p.m. in the Lubar Commons at the Law School.

Bignami specializes on rights and democracy in the European Union and comparative public law.

Robert Fairlie, of the University of California, Santa Cruz economics faculty, will give two talks in March.

On Tuesday, March 10, Fairlie will speak on “Immigrant Entrepreneurs” at noon in the conference room of the La Follette School.

On Thursday, March 12, at 12:15 p.m., Fairlie will speak on “The Effects of Home Computers on Educational Outcomes: Evidence from a Field Experiment with Low-Income Community College Students” at the Institute for Research on Poverty in 8417 Social Sciences.

Fairlie’s areas of specialization include labor economics, entrepreneurship, public economics and applied econometrics.

At noon on Tuesday, March 31, John Micklewright will speak on “Does Charitable Giving for International Development Differ from Giving for Donkey Welfare?” The event will be held at the La Follette School conference room.

Micklewright will also speak on Thursday, April 9, at the Poverty Institute on “How Reliable are Income Data Collected with a Single Question?” The speech begins at 12:15 p.m. in 8417 Social Sciences.

Micklewright is professor of social statistics and policy analysis at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.
