Sept. 11 ‘Never Forget’ memorial observance on campus

September 9, 2008 By

The University of Wisconsin–Madison College Republicans, in partnership with the College Democrats and several other student organizations, are inviting students, faculty, staff and members of the local community to come together this Thursday as part of a nationwide effort to honor and remember the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Among the other UW–Madison student organizations involved in the observance are: Associated Students of Madison; the Federalist Society; the Muslim Student Association; Army ROTC; and the Badger Herald.

Beginning around 6:30 a.m., 2,977 small American flags — one for each victim — will be placed on the lower third of Bascom Hill. Students and community members are encouraged to help with the placement. Students who lost family members or friends in the attacks are invited to set up personal photo memorials and/or flowers in their honor.

At 7 p.m. a brief non-partisan, non-denominational memorial service will be held in 6210 Social Science, 1180 Observatory Drive. It will conclude with a candlelight vigil at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Bascom Hill around the memorial, after which the flags will be taken down.
