Second service trip to Montana added

Due to strong alumni interest in this summer’s Service and Learning Adventure excursion to Browning, Mont., a second trip has been added Aug. 2-10.

SaLA brings together students, faculty and alumni to visit and volunteer to work at particular sites, in this case the Blackfeet reservation. There the participants learn about indigenous people and cultures, see a new and different part of the country and volunteer to benefit their host communities.

SaLA represents a partnership between the Wisconsin Alumni Association, Morgridge Center for Public Service and the Wisconsin Union. The pilot program this summer will bring UW–Madison students, alumni, faculty and staff together to offer their time and expertise in two different destinations: the Glencree Centre for Reconciliation in Glencree, Ireland and the Blackfeet Reservation in Browning, Mont. Global Volunteers, a nonprofit corporation affiliated with the United Nations, is coordinating the trips.

SaLA puts varied university constituents to work side-by-side with host community members, says Jeff Wendorf, WAA vice president of outreach.

For the second Montana trip, three spots are available for students. The trip costs $250, plus transportation. Financial aid is available and an additional $250 will be provided to help cover airfare expenses.
