School of Music mourns loss of longtime professor

The School of Music and opera lovers in Madison and beyond mourn the death of David Hottmann, professor of music emeritus, who passed away on Jan. 2.

Hottmann taught voice and vocal literature for the school from 1966 through his retirement in 1998. He appeared in many University Opera productions directed by Karlos Moser, including the title roles of “Falstaff” and “Don Pasquale.”

A baritone, Hottmann frequently sang major roles for Madison Opera productions, including “The Ballad of Baby Doe” in 1969, “Carmen” in 1970, “The Merry Widow” in 1987 and “Candide” in 1993. He was a member of the Madison Opera Showcase until his illness last year.
