Road construction limits Charter Street access

June 21, 2007

Road construction season is posing a stiff challenge for campus-area commuters, especially near University Avenue and Charter Street.

The city of Madison is replacing some lanes on University Avenue, and the work has required closing Charter Street to northbound traffic from University Avenue from Thursday, June 21 through the weekend. The intersection will be open to southbound traffic.

Officials say the intersection is expected to reopen to northbound traffic by Monday, June 25.

Due to congestion on University Avenue west of Park Street caused by the project, travelers are advised to take an alternate route, including entering campus on streets further to the east — such as Park or Lake streets.

Buses will be rerouted to use Babcock Drive instead of Charter Street. The Route 80 bus will not turn onto University Avenue from Charter Street but will detour to Dayton Street and use Randall Avenue to reach its regular stop at Union South.
