Registrar finalists named for UW-Madison

November 13, 2002 By John Lucas

The university has narrowed the field of candidates for university registrar to four finalists.

A nine-member committee recommended the finalists to Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Paul Barrows after a nationwide search. The committee, which was chaired by Tom Scott, assistant vice chancellor for student affairs, included faculty, students, and academic and classified staff.

A final decision on the appointment will be made after finalists visit campus. The new registrar will replace Monty Nielsen, who left the position in January.

The Office of Registrar is responsible for the academic records of students and alumni. It coordinates degree-audit services, course registration, grading, transcripts, course schedules, diploma services, transcripts and fee assessment. In addition, the office works to preserve the integrity of student data and protect student privacy rights.

“I want to thank the search committee for their work in presenting us with an outstanding group of finalists,” says Barrows. “I’m excited to take the search to the next level.”

The finalists are:

Joanne Berg, interim registrar at UW–Madison. Prior to moving to the Office of Registrar earlier this year, Berg served as associate dean of the graduate school for admissions and student services.

W. Michael George, associate registrar for student support at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to his academic experience, George served in the U.S. Air Force as a deputy base commander in Europe and a management consultant.

Alice Poehls, registrar and associate director of admissions and records at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Poehls also served as director of admissions and records and registrar at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D.

Craig Westman, associate dean of enrollment services, director of admissions and university registrar at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich. Westman also served as an assistant registrar at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla.
