New voice mail system adds Web features

May 4, 2011

Starting Monday, May 9, UW–Madison will have a new voice mail system with new features, at the same low monthly price. The system makes it even easier and more efficient to send and retrieve messages from almost anywhere.

Any voice mail account holder can manage their account settings over the phone or on the Web. From the Web you can also

  • Listen to, forward, save, download and delete messages
  • Change your greetings and set an out-of-office greeting
  • Change your security code
  • Set up a personal operator to allow callers to press “0” to be transferred to a designated campus or local number
  • Send your voice messages as an attachment to your email account
  • Send notification only of new voice mail messages to your email account
  • Configure the daily message reminder, which calls you once each day when new messages are waiting in your mailbox

Voice-mail messages can be listened to from the Web in three formats:

  • Audio streaming to your computer
  • A phone call to you at a campus extension or a local Madison phone number
  • WAV format file download (which typically plays in iTunes or Windows Media Player) on your computer

Current customers need to take a few simple steps to make the switch to the new service. New customers as well can start using the service quickly.

Find out how the new service works by viewing this screencast.

Current UW–Madison voice mail users should upgrade by following these steps. Please do this by 4 p.m. on Friday, May 6.

Initializing your new mailbox will not convert you immediately to the new voice mail system. Another step will be done by Voice Services and AT&T over the weekend of May 7-8 to complete the process. Your new mailbox will be available for use on Monday, May 9. The old voice mail system will continue to work as usual up to the weekend of May 7-8, but during this weekend your new messages will begin to be sent to the new system. On May 9, you may want to check the old voice mail system for any new messages that may have come in during the switch from the old system to the new system. Starting May 9, dial 265-5500 (or 5-5500) and stop using the old system.

If you are not a current UW–Madison voice mail user but want to sign up, first contact the person authorized to make telephone changes in your department. Find out who this is by using the Voice Services Authorized User Lookup tool.

General voice mail information is available at from DoIT. Technical support information is available by searching on “voice mail” on the University of Wisconsin KnowledgeBase.
