National research facility to open its doors to public

UW–Madison’s Synchrotron Radiation Center will hold its annual open house Sunday, April 7.

The center in the town of Dunn at the Kegonsa Research Campus, 3731 Schneider Drive, off Highway 51 between McFarland and Stoughton.

During the noon-5 p.m. event, center staff will offer tours of the facility, including a walk around the electron storage ring. The last tour will be at 4 p.m.

The center is a tool for researchers from across the world who perform precise experiments, such as examining rocks as old as the Earth to studying how diseases work. Visitors will have a chance to participate in family-friendly interactive activities.

Scientists will talk about their research in short presentations that help explain how science research is done using synchrotron light. This intense light is produced with a 300-foot circumference electron storage ring.
