Lawrence Berger, assistant professor of Social Work and Institute for Research on Poverty affiliate, was awarded a K-01 Mentored Research Scientist Development award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Kevin Check has been named senior director of school and college relations at the Wisconsin Alumni Association.

Computer sciences professor David DeWitt and chemistry and biochemistry professor M. Thomas Record were inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Garrett R. Oetzel, School of Veterinary Medicine, received the 2007 Alpharma Award of Excellence from the American Association of Bovine Practitioners.

Eric Sandren has been appointed director of the Animal Care and Use Program and will oversee the Research Animal Resource Center.

Alliant Energy’s Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Awards recognize outstanding instruction among UW System faculty, and two of these awards went to UW–Madison professors this year: Harold Scheub, African languages and literature, and Suzanne Scott, professor of environment, textiles, and design.

“How to Lead Effective Meetings” was selected as the winner in the Web category in the recent Information Mapping international competition. Co-sponsored by the Office of Quality Improvement (OQI) and the Office of Human Resource Development, the Web site provides tools and techniques for productive meetings. Authors of the site are Kathleen Paris, OQI, and Les Howles, Division of Information Technology.

Helen Blackwell, Department of Chemistry, was selected by Popular Science magazine as one of their sixth annual “Brilliant Ten,” a list of young American scientists recognized for their creativity in pursuit of answers to groundbreaking research questions. Blackwell was chosen for her work on understanding and blocking bacterial communication and infectivity.

Two students at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Heather Blasel and Maryn Ptaschinski, were among 20 students nationally to receive an American Association of Bovine Practitioners Amstutz Scholarship Award during the AABP’s annual meeting.

Thomas DuBois, Department of Scandinavian Studies, has been appointed Birgit Baldwin Professor.

Valerie Gilchrist has been appointed chair of the Department of Family Medicine in the School of Medicine and Public Health.

Minesh Mehta, Department of Human Oncology, has been appointed Eric Wolfe Brain Tumor Professor in Human Oncology.

David Shulman, former managing director and head Real Estate Investment Track Analyst at Lehman Brothers, has been named assistant director of the Applied Real Estate Investment Track for the James A. Graaskamp Center for Real Estate at the School of Business.

Chuck Snowdon, Hilldale Professor of Psychology and Zoology, was honored by the American Society of Primatologists, which held a special meeting titled “Outstanding Mentor Symposium Honoring Chuck Snowdon” that featured many of Snowdon’s former graduate and undergraduate students attending and presenting papers.
