Owl with eye lens implant to be released back into wild

The great horned owl that received the first-ever specifically designed and fabricated intraocular lens implants at the UW–Madison School of Veterinary Medicine on Jan. 22, will also be the first owl released into the wild after cataract surgery and implantation of intraocular lenses.

Employees ice cream social May 5

What's your favorite Babcock ice cream flavor? Is it orange custard chocolate chip? Chocolate peanut butter? Or the old standby and most popular, vanilla? Those will be just some of the flavors to choose from at the second annual UW–Madison ice cream social. The event, which marks State Employee Recognition Day in Wisconsin, will take place rain or shine on Wednesday, May 5, from 2:30-4 p.m. on upper Bascom Hill. All UW–Madison employees are encouraged to attend.

This year's Teaching and Learning Symposium, May 18-21, focuses on an expanded concept of literacy, one that encompasses information, communication, science, math and cultural literacy, in addition to reading and writing. All these "literacies" refer to fundamental abilities to identify and critically use information of all sorts, and to be able to communicate.
