Jail library group celebrates 10 years

September 24, 2002

The Jail Library Student Group, which provides all recreational and educational library services to Dane County Jail inmates, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary with a colloquim on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 3:30 p.m. in the School of Library and Information Studies Commons, Helen C. White Hall, 4th floor, on the UW campus.

The colloquim will include a history of the project and a description of the current group, which includes more than 20 School of Library and Information Studies students. Sheriff Gary Hamblin is scheduled to attend.

The volunteer student organization was started in 1992, by Michele Besant as a field project through the School of Library and Information Studies. In 1999, the Jail Library Student Group received a Presidential Voluntary Service Award for its efforts. Besant received her master’s degree in 1992 and her Ph.D in 1999 from UW–Madison.
