Hoofers to offer sailboat rides for disabled

June 20, 2000

Hoofers Club will hold an “Adaptive Sail Free Day,” Saturday, July 8, from 12:30-6 p.m. on the lakefront behind Memorial Union. The event is to help commemorate the 10th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Sailboat rides last 30 to 45 minutes. The last ride begins at 5 p.m.

For those needing assistance, there will be supportive seating, sign language interpreter and people assigned to help novice sailors get into and out of boats. Participants must be 18 years or older. Because space is limited to the first 40 people who sign up, advanced registration is advised. If there is space, walk-ins will be accepted.

To register, contact the Outdoor Programs Office in Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St., Madison, WI 53706-1485; call 608-262-1630; or email Mark Scheuer at mscheuer@students.wisc.edu.

Participants are urged to come prepared to protect themselves from wind, water and sun with sunblock, hat and jacket.

Hoofers, one of ten student-run committees comprising the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) which develops, promotes and coordinates nearly 1,000 events annually at the university, is the oldest and largest campus recreational programming organization in the nation.
