German official to attend UW center’s opening

A high-ranking German official will be among the dignitaries expected to attend the opening of the Center for German and European Studies.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 30, at 3:30 p.m. at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, 816 State St.

Distinguished guests, including high-ranking German and Wisconsin officials, will speak about the importance of German-American cooperation over 150 years of Wisconsin statehood, with a view to the new millenium and a new Europe.

Among the speakers will be Karsten D. Voigt, coordinator for German-American Cooperation, Foreign Affairs Ministry, Federal Republic of Germany.

The center is a collaborative effort between UW–Madison and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. It is funded partly by the German Marshall Fund administered by the German Academic Exchange Service and the two partner universities.

The center fosters the training of a new generation of German and European studies experts across a wide variety of disciplines, including the social and political sciences, law and economics. The consortium builds on long-standing ties between two outstanding public research universities. Information: Klaus L.
