AWARDS

Suomi High School Scholarship
The UW–Madison Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies awards scholarships to any graduating high school senior who has demonstrated excellent achievements in the physical sciences and who plans to attend a UW System undergraduate program in the physical sciences, especially meteorology, earth science, oceanography, physics, astronomy, science or math education, environmental science, and engineering.

Award winners receive a $1,000 scholarship to be used during the freshman year at any UW campus and a certificate of recognition at their high school graduation ceremony. The scholarship is named for Professor Verner E. Suomi who held tenure in the Department of Meteorology (now called Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences) from 1948 until his retirement in 1995.

The 2004 scholarship recipients and their intended majors are: Katherine Behrendt of Waukesha, materials engineering at UW–Madison; Jacob Cychosz of Waunakee, astronomy/physics at UW–Madison; Elise Gorchels of Fitchburg, astronomy at UW–Madison or UW-Milwaukee; and Victoria Vasys of Madison, electrical engineering at UW–Madison.
