October 15, 2012

Three finalists have been selected in the university’s search for an assistant dean and director of the Center for the First-Year Experience.

A six-member search and screen committee, chaired by Associate Dean of Students Kevin Helmkamp, recommended these finalists, who will give public presentations on the following dates:

  • Friday, Oct. 19 – Carren Martin, interim co-director, Center for the First-Year Experience, UW–Madison.
  • Monday, Oct. 22 – Elizabeth John, assistant dean of students/director of student activities, at Madison’s Edgewood College.
  • Monday, Oct. 29 – Emily Arth, senior assistant director, Office of First-Year Experience Programs, Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind.

All public presentations are currently scheduled from 1:15-2:15 p.m. in the Masley Media Room in the Red Gym on the dates noted.

The mission of the center is to understand and improve a student’s first year at UW–Madison.  The center plans and implements yearlong welcome and transition events, including new student orientation and programs for freshmen and transfer students.

The center, a department in the Division of Student Life, also develops courses, programs, and partnerships to enhance the first-year experience for all students.
