Event promotes fire safety among students

January 18, 2008 By John Lucas

Dozens of University of Wisconsin–Madison students were deeply affected by a pair of serious, fall semester fires in downtown Madison.

A coalition led by Dean of Students Lori Berquam and the Madison Fire Department (MFD) plans to give away nearly 2,000 donated Rayovac 9-volt batteries in order to stress the importance of working smoke detectors and to improve overall fire safety.

A media event launching UW–Madison’s "Fire Safety Awareness Week" will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Memorial Union. (Check TITU for exact room location.)

Speakers will include Berquam and Madison Fire Community Education specialist Lori Wirth.

Partners in the campaign include MFD, Spectrum Brands, Ian’s Pizza, the Offices of the Dean of Students Campus Safety Taskforce, the Madison Landlord Council, Tallard Apartments and the Campus Area Housing Listing Service.
