Event looks ahead to new Union South cinema

December 13, 2010

As part of the series of events anticipating Union South’s spring unveiling, UW–Madison will celebrate the facility’s new cinema Wednesday, Dec. 15.

Students are invited to Play Circle Theater at the Memorial Union at 7 or 9:30 p.m. to watch the film “Easy A” and enjoy complimentary popcorn and treats. Doors open 30 minutes prior to show times but seating and refreshments are limited.

When the new Union South opens on April 15, its 350-seat Marquee—with Badger Market serving concessions on the main level—will become the hub of campus cinema, as organizations such as the Film Committee of the Wisconsin Union Directorate program diverse movies throughout the year from blockbusters to avant-garde shorts.

“The Marquee will give campus its first dedicated cinema, offering up to seven nights a week of free programming,” says Tom Yoshikami, committee advisor. “The theater will be equipped with a high-definition digital projector as well as dual 35-mm projectors, enabling a variety of different formats.”

The next event — on Feb. 15 — will highlight Union South as a music venue, bringing bands to the Memorial Union’s Rathskeller in a competition to perform at April’s grand opening. Contest information is available at http://newunion.wisc.edu/events.html
