Dance program plans full season

The Dance Program will host a range of innovative dance and technology events, performances and classes throughout the fall.

Bill T. Jones, dancer, choreographer, and master of modern dance presents a free, public lecture, “Bill T. Jones on Artists’ Collaboration,” Friday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. in Lathrop Hall.

New York dancer/choreographer Heidi Latsky will be in residence at the Dance Program for two weeks in November. Latsky, formerly a principal dancer and teacher with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, will teach master classes and set a work on students to be performed in the Faculty Concert Nov. 21-23.

Madison-based Jin-Wen Yu Dance, back from a summer season of touring with performances in Eugene, Oregon, New York City, Seattle and Bahia of Brazil, will present “Intersection,” a cross-cultural, multi-media dance concert featuring Yu’s trademark athletic yet sensual movement style, Sept. 19-21, 8 p.m., Madison Civic Center Spotlight Room. With the spotlight on world dance, a one-night Alumni World Dance Concert features performances by Dance Program alumni and other special guests including traditional Indian dancer Parul Shah, Friday, Oct. 11, 8 p.m., Lathrop Hall.

Following on the heels of successful concerts at Joyce SoHo in New York City, Li Chiao-Ping Dance returns home with “Serious Fun,” a program of premieres choreographed by Li, Oct. 17-19, 8 p.m.; benefit concert Sunday, Oct. 20, 5:30 p.m., Lathrop Hall. Tickets and information: 263-5735.

Dance Program students will present a variety of multi-media, solo and group work ranging from the improvisational to the highly structured in the Fall Student Concert, Oct. 31, Nov. 1-2, 8 p.m., Lathrop Hall.

The Fall Faculty Concert featuring new and recent works by distinguished faculty members Li Chiao-Ping and Jin-Wen Yu, Guest Artist Heidi Latsky, visiting instructors Barbara Grubel and Marlene Skog, and others will be Nov. 21-23, 8 p.m.

Highlighting the season is a Dance and Technology Festival made possible by generous support from the Anonymous Fund and the School of Education. The festival is designed to bridge dance and new technologies in a unique learning environment for students. Five guest artists, all well known nationally and internationally in the field of dance and technology, will each spend a week in residence:

• Sept. 15-22: Victoria Marks, choreographer, University of California at Los Angeles, dance film, community practice.
• Oct. 6-13: John Mitchell, composer, Arizona State University, Midi interface, MAX/MSP.
• Nov. 3-10: Michael Cole, digital choreographer, San Francisco, dance/animation.
• Jan. 25-Feb. 2: Yacov Sharir, virtual choreographer, University of Texas at Austin, dance and virtual environments.
• Feb. 23-March 2: Ellen Bromberg, choreographer, University of Utah, Hybrid Performance Project.
