Continuing studies announces non-traditional student scholarships

January 3, 2007

The Division of Continuing Studies (DCS) announces the availability of scholarships for returning adult and single-parent students at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Currently enrolled or newly admitted degree-students are eligible for the awards. Students may be taking classes on a full- or part-time basis. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000 annually and assist with the cost of tuition, books and other education-related expenses.

To qualify for returning adult awards, students must have experienced a significant break in their education. Single-parent candidates are not required to have a break in education, but must qualify as the head of household under IRS guidelines. Demonstrated financial need is a consideration for all scholarships.

“The diversity of life experiences returning adults and single parents add to any classroom are a priceless addition to our learning communities,” says Howard Martin, dean of the Division of Continuing Studies. “We are thankful to our donors for their generosity and commitment to higher education. These funds make it possible for us to continue to expand access to UW–Madison degrees to a wide variety of Wisconsin citizens.”

These awards are supported by grants from the Bernard Osher Foundation; the American Association of University Women-Madison Branch; the Evjue Foundation Inc.; the University League, Inc.; the Alma Baron Second Chance for Women Fund; the Joe Corry and Barbara Weston Corry Scholarship Fund; the Bernice D. Kuney Scholarship Fund; the Participatory Learning and Teaching Organization (PLATO); the Professor Nancy W. Denney Memorial Scholarship Fund; the Stuart Daily Seeds of Learning Fund; and other private donors.

The deadline to apply for scholarships for the 2007-2008 academic year is March 1, 2007. Applicants must be fully admitted to UW–Madison before August 15, 2007. For information about the admissions process, contact the DCS Adult and Student Service Center at (608) 263-6960.
