Chancellor to honor distinguished undergraduates

May 8, 2013

This year’s Chancellor’s Undergraduate Awards ceremony will recognize 135 UW–Madison winners of the Hilldale Fellowship, the Herfurth and Kubly Awards, the Holstrom Environmental Scholarship and the University Book Store Awards, as well as winners of the national Goldwater, Udall and Truman scholarships and more.

The ceremony will be held Thursday, May 9, from 7-8:30 p.m. in Great Hall of the Memorial Union.

A total of 109 undergraduates will receive the $3,000 Wisconsin/Hilldale Undergraduate and Faculty Research Fellowships. Grants from the Hilldale Foundation and the Wisconsin State Legislature provide for these awards, which, in addition to the monetary prize, give undergraduates the opportunity to work in collaboration on research projects with a faculty advisor.

The competitive $2,000 Theodore Herfurth and Teddy Kubly Awards for Initiative and Efficiency will be awarded to two UW–Madison students out of a pool of more then 150 nominees. A grant from the Herfurth-Kubly family funds the awards, which are based on outstanding performance in the areas of academic achievement, service, leadership and self-support.

A grant from Carleton and Mary Beth Holstrom provides for the Holstrom Environmental Scholarships. Each of the four winners will receive $4,000, plus the opportunity to work with a faculty member on research projects relating to the environment.

Twenty undergraduates will receive the University Book Store Academic Excellence Award of $1,000. The award is granted to undergraduate students who demonstrated excellence by completing a project through independent study.

This year’s ceremony will also honor recipients of the nationwide $34,000 Beinecke Scholarship, the $7,500 Barry M. Goldwater and $5,000 Morris K. Udall scholarships. Additionally, recipients of the Harvey M. Meyerhoff Undergraduate Excellence Award for leadership, service and scholarship will be honored.
