Capitol veteran, a UW–Madison alumnus, to direct state relations
Matt Kussow has been hired as the new director of state government relations at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
“I’m excited to bring my skill set and knowledge of the legislative process to UW–Madison,” says Kussow, who is a 1992 graduate of the university. “I’ve always felt that a strong UW makes for a strong Wisconsin. I look forward to this opportunity to contribute to this great institution.”

Kussow has 22 years of experience working in government affairs, including 15 years as an aide and policy analyst in the state Assembly. Kussow has served for the past seven years as executive director of the Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools, a nonprofit representing 100,000 students statewide.
“We are pleased to bring someone of Matt’s caliber on board,” says Charles Hoslet, associate vice chancellor for government and corporate affairs. “His experience will be welcome as we work with policymakers on the upcoming state budget and related legislative issues that impact the campus.”
Kussow is expected to join UW–Madison in early January. He replaces Don Nelson, who has been named chief of staff for the vice provost for information technology and chief information officer.
