Campus urged to beware of new phishing scams

March 4, 2010

The Office of Campus Information Security (OCIS) is aware of two new phishing emails targeting UW’s NetID login service.

If users click the link in the phishing email, they are directed to fake NetID login sites that are very realistic and well replicated. Users could easily be fooled by these phishing attempts.

You should not click a link in an email such as this, but rather type in the URL yourself.  In addition, always look for “https” in the URL. If all you see is “http,” the login site is a fake.

OCIS has asked the sites hosting the phishing attempts to remove the fake pages and has blocked the IP addresses referenced in the phishing emails.

If you have any questions or concerns about an email you think might be a fake, contact your local IT support person or the DoIT Help Desk at help@doit.wisc.edu or 264-HELP.
