Campus police conduct bicycle education and enforcement

September 7, 2011

Through Oct. 15, University of Wisconsin–Madison police officers will be conducting concentrated bicycle education and enforcement across the UW–Madison campus.

Officers will conduct a period of education contacting cyclists for various violations. Individuals contacted during this education period will be provided information on the violation and how they can improve their safety.

After the education period is complete, officers will continue to make contacts but will issue citations for violations. Individuals receiving citations will be offered the opportunity to attend a practical bicycling seminar in lieu of appearing in court.

The UW-Madison Police Department is committed to improving the safety of the campus community by increasing compliance with traffic laws through education and enforcement. Although law enforcement efforts are an important part of public safety, police rely heavily on the cooperation of the public to be aware of and to follow all traffic laws, whether as a pedestrian, bicyclist or motorist.
