Bascom Hill tour offered

April 8, 2002

No books or backpacks are required. Comfortable shoes and a curiosity for the past are all that’s needed to enjoy the Bascom Hill Historic District Guided Campus Walking Tour at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20.

An experienced undergraduate student tour guide will lead visitors among the campus’ oldest buildings and share stories of the university’s first years. The 45-minute tour begins at historic Armory and Gymnasium (Red Gym), 716 Langdon St.

The tour route winds through Library Mall, over the Park Street bridge and up Bascom Hill to Bascom Hall, down the hill near Science Hall, in front of the Memorial Union and back to the Red Gym. The route includes moderate inclines and is wheelchair accessible.

Reservations are required. Call (608) 265-9500 by noon, Friday, April 19.

Parking is available in nearby campus or city ramps including the State Street-Campus Ramp near the corner of Lake and State streets, and below Helen C. White Hall at the end of Park Street.

The Bascom Hill Historic District tour is sponsored by the UW–Madison Campus Information and Visitor Center.
